The Presidents Cup officially teed off with a black-tie dinner welcoming the world’s best golfers.
Team captains Tiger Woods and Ernie Els walked the red carpet at Crown with their players and partners ahead of the prestigious event at Royal Melbourne Golf Club this week.
Australian star Marc Leishman said it was nice for a boy from Warrnambool to get dressed up.
“Nah, you don’t have too many reasons to wear (a black tie) in Warrnambool,’’ he said.
“My wife really likes to dress up and this will be the first time that I’ve ever worn a black tie so it will be fun.
“It’s really cool to have my family here, mum and dad are here. I’ve got my sister here as well. This is only the second tournament of mine that she’s ever been to. So yeah it’s cool having them on the side for this.”
US star Justin Thomas is here with his partner Jillian Wisniewski.
“It’s great, all of our significant others are some of our biggest supporting cast and are there for a lot of moments that everybody else doesn’t see, the good and the bad,’’ he said.
“To be able to share really cool weeks like this makes it a lot more special.
“For me I’m very fortunate I have a great girlfriend I love spending time with … for me alone to see Australia and to get to do it together adds another element.
“It’s hard for us golfers to look too cool but this is as close as we’ll get.”
