New details of the underworld grave robbery of Meshilin Marrogi has been revealed, including the car believed to be used in the attack.
It comes as police set-up an information centre outside the Preston General Cemetery on Monday as they continue their investigation into the targeted crime.
Two men broke into the mausoleum on Plenty Rd about 5am on July 30 and desecrated the resting place of Ms Marrogi, the sister of gangland boss George Marrogi, who died in 2021 at age 30.
Items inside the mausoleum were smashed, while Ms Marrogi’s coffin was dragged a short distance before it, too, was smashed open and abandoned.
Investigators also believe that a diamond ring of significant value was removed from the body.
Detectives have released a picture of a car similar to one seen near the cemetery on the morning of the burglary – a dark coloured Mini Cooper.
In December, police released details of two men they want to identify as part of their investigation.
The pair was wearing gas masks, hooded jumpers and dark clothing at the time of the crime.
Detectives are keen to speak to anyone with information about that car, including its current whereabouts.
It is believed that whoever carried out the crime would likely have known exactly where they were going to find the right crypt and may have been carrying tools.
The act is believed to have been a strike at her drug boss brother George, who is serving a 32-year prison sentence for the 2016 murder of underworld figure Kadir Ors at the Campbellfield Plaza shopping centre.
George has in the past been regarded as one of the most dangerous men in Melbourne’s Middle-Eastern organised crime landscape.
Police encourage anyone who may have information about this incident to come and speak to them at the information caravan.
It will be situated at the cemetery in Bundoora between 9.30am and 2.30pm on Monday.
