RESIDENTS whose homes are under the flight path of the new runway have raised concerns about noise pollution and house prices.

A public meeting scheduled last night gave people the opportunity to raise concerns about the planned new runway and how it would affect them.

Gladstone Park residents learnt of the impending runway and future flight circuits last night and some were fuming at the prospect of losing up to $100,000 in assets as a result of the development.

LJ Hooker Tullamarine managing director Steve Hoblos predicted houses directly under the flight path - mainly in Gladstone Park and Broadmeadows - would immediately drop in value by 10 to 30 per cent.

COMMENT: Rail link a logical step in runway bid

"Of course it will impact homeowners under the flight path, but people will get used to it in time," he said.

"But the airport itself is already established, so it could be good for us business-wise if it's bringing more activity to the area.

"If we want these facilities to develop, we need to embrace change."

But Carrick Drive couple Eugene Marin and Carmen Pizzo-Marin said the new runway was cause for "great concern".

"We definitely don't want it here," Mrs Pizzo-Marin said. "It's a worry to think it's going to take so much money off our house value and there's nothing we can do to stop it.

"We're on a main road and there's already an influx of traffic. If there's going to be more low-flying planes, I'd be very concerned. This area is already noisy enough as it is.

"Another 80,000 services a year is one hell of a lot of air traffic. Pollution is another issue; there's already plenty of dust circulation because of the planes."

The family called for restriction times to be introduced on all flights that utilised the new runway, with services ideally operational from 6am to 9pm.

"The question is what time are the planes going to stop flying each day. If they're going to be taking off after 9pm I'd be pretty cheesed off," Mrs Pizzo-Marin said.

Carrick Drive milk bar owner Steve Shen said residents often complained of regular flights that already swooped over the area every 10 minutes.

"It's not a good thing for people living here. I think some might try to move elsewhere now," he said.
