A Townsville woman has opened up about the terrifying moment she was ambushed in her driveway by a gang of rampaging youths armed with a baseball bat.
Police are investigating after youths in a stolen car robbed a woman outside her home in Belgian Gardens on Thursday, only about half an hour before they broke a man’s arm during another horrific attack outside the Townsville Airport.
A 38-year-old woman, who didn’t wish to be named, said she had just come home from running some errands when she was ambushed by a group of youths in her driveway on Parramatta St about 5.37pm.
CCTV footage shows five juveniles pulling up in a stolen white Hyundai Kona and trying to pull her from the driver’s seat of her blue BMW X5.
“One of the boys was screaming at me, ‘Get out of the car,’ and I said no,” she said.
“He pulled the door, and I grabbed hold of it, fighting him for the door. He realised what I was doing and then slammed the door closed on my right leg.”
“I pointed to my security cameras and told him you’re on camera, but he responded. ‘I don’t care.”
The woman’s screams alerted her 27-year-old female friend, who had been gardening in the yard and quickly ran to her aid.
Her friend was confronted with another young boy armed a baseball bat who swung at her several times but she didn’t run away.
Putting her hands up calmly, the woman simply told the boy, ‘Don’t do this.’
As this chaos unfolded, one of the other youths in the group snuck into the passenger seat and stole the woman’s handbag containing her phone, wallet and a few treasured personal items.
“He took my bag and ran, I was trying to chase him, but he was sidestepping me like football moves,” she said.
“Then the boy with the bat came out of nowhere in front of me and threatened me, saying, ‘If you go for that bag, I’ll hit you.’
“Then he feigned a swing at my head. It didn’t make contact.”
The youths gave up on stealing the car and drove off with the handbag.
The incident happened only minutes after kids in a stolen white Hyundai Kona were involved in another brutal assault near the Townsville Airport.
The youths repeatedly hit the 59-year-old man with a baseball bat when he attempted to stop them trying to steal hire cars at a car park in Garbutt around 5.20pm.
The man was transported to the Townsville University Hospital with a broken arm.
The youths then fled the scene in the stolen Hyundai, and police are appealing to anyone who may have dashcam footage of the car to contact police.
Investigations are ongoing. No arrests have been made at this stage.
