A TOWNSVILLE underwater photographer has endeavoured to capture the Great Barrier Reef in its glory in anticipation for when international travel restrictions are eased.

Christopher Brunner recently collaborated with a Japanese TV show and its crew to film the Coral Greenhouse sculpture on the artificial John Brewer Reef.

The 58-tonne installation is part of the Museum of Underwater Art and was opened to the public at the beginning of the year.

Mr Brunner said the filming happened over one day.

“The main aim of the TV show is to show different locations around the world,” he said.

“I shot different statues on the reef and essentially was showing why it is worth coming to Townsville from Japan for an awesome vacation.”

The TV show is expected to be aired in Japan early next year after Mr Brunner’s raw footage is edited. Mr Brunner said the artificial reef still needed time to settle into its new home.

“It is still super new so there are no corals and no real marine life right now but after a couple of years when it is covered by the reef, it should be beautiful.”

The German-born photographer is completing a PHD in marine biology at JCU.
