Townsville Army Commander leads ANZAC march

TOWNSVILLE’S most senior Army figure is set to end his tenure in the city’s top military job at the end of the year.

But where he will go next, and who will step into his shoes is still unknown.

Brigadier Kahlil Fegan, the commander of the 3rd Brigade stepped back into the shoes of the soldiers he commands on Anzac Day and led a contingent of hundreds of soldiers as they marched in memory of those lost to war.

The military man said he felt a great sense of pride joining his soldiers in the march, an unusual step to honour the visit of Chief of Army Lieutenant General Rick Burr and to recognise the work of soldiers over the past year.

“That was very special for me today,” he said

“I will never have the opportunity to march at the front of the parade again through the streets of Townsville- so a great privilege for me.”

Earlier this year Brigadier Fegan confirmed he would remain in his position for another year at the direct request of Lieutenant General Burr.

Speaking to the Bulletin on Monday, Brigadier Fegan said his tenure in the commander role was expected to end of 2022.

“The Chief of Army will announce in the not too distant future who the next Commander will be and I know that person will be as proud and overjoyed to have this wonderful opportunity as I have,” he said.

“We serve at the pleasure of and I will go where the Defence Force needs me.”
