A month spent unleashing her inner creativity is reaping rewards for a local artist.

Kelso’s Ashleigh Jane spent last October challenging herself to protect her mind from art block by producing 31 pieces for every day of the month as part of Inktober.

Inktober was created by American artist Jake Parker in 2009 calling on other artists to draw an ink painting every day for the month of October.

Ms Jane is celebrating Inktober 2020 with the release of her book Bestiary, comprising the 31 ink drawings she completed in 2019.

She said Bestiary was based on the lust to unlock her imagination.

“A drawing a day is asking a lot ... and after 31 days, you run out of ideas so you need to go down other avenues,” Ms Jane said.

“I wanted to depict mythical creatures, but not ones you see every day because everyone knows what a dragon and a phoenix looks like.”

A self-confessed “hoarder of books”, Ms Jane spent two months leading up to Inktober last year planning her drawings.

“There are deeper stories in religions and myths and I find those creatures that no one knows about, and through my research I found so many creatures with no depictions or drawings,” she said.

“I thought that was a good challenge to try and recreate those creatures.”

Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from JCU in 2014, Ms Jane said she had been drawing since she “could hold a pencil”.
