A Townsville supermarket has been evacuated after an electrical malfunction in a ceiling on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to Woolworths The Avenues in Thuringowa about 2pm.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said a triple-0 call was made reporting smoke coming from the ceiling.

The shop was evacuated and firefighters found a transformer which had tripped, in the ceiling space, the spokeswoman said.

The transformer was “smoking a little bit” and had turned itself off, she said.

There was no significant damage and Woolworths were getting an electrician to attend, the spokeswoman said.
