A THURINGOWA candidate is feeding off the momentum of a Facebook group she started 12 months ago vowing to tackle youth crime head on.
Julianne Wood has been campaigning full-time for the upcoming state election on October 31 after joining Katter’s Australian Party six months ago.
Starting the ‘Take Back Townsville’ Facebook group last November, Ms Wood said she wanted to take back control of her town.
“I started the page when the gold (Nissan) Navara was stolen and the (Townsville) airport had to be shut down as a result,” she said.
“I thought something needs to be done in the city, everything is getting way out of hand.”
The incident Ms Wood referred to ocurred last October when carjackers in three seperate stolen vehicles led police on a chase for several hours which involved the PolAir helicopter.
After working at Centrelink for 15 years, it was an easy decision to enter politics with Ms Wood’s number one priority to put Townsville first.

“I have pride in my town. I was born here and it is about time someone stood up like me and said, it is time to get some things fixed here,” she said.
“I am very fiery and I don’t take no for an answer and I know that things need to change and they have needed to change for years.
“Everyone is completely fed up with the two major parties and people are cranky nothing has been done to address our crime issues,” she said.
The mother-of-three said the Katter’s Australian Party wanted to provide the courts with a “third sentencing option”. “We want to have the kids removed from the city and taken 800km out to Kajabbi and that will be a period of six to 12 months,” she said.
Ms Wood was not included in Saturday’s Thuringowa candidate list that appeared in the Townsville Bulletin.
