With Christmas less than 30 sleeps awaym Townsville’s ‘That Christmas Shop’ has spoken about how to decorate your home ahead of the festive season.

Germany's oldest Christmas market opens for 588th year

Husband-and-husband team Russel Duncan and Rick Seidel have been working seven days a week since September 1, running That Christmas Shop in Townsville.

Mr Duncan said locals started buying up their Christmas decorations early this year and several new trends are on the rise.

“The moment we went seven days a week on September 1 we’ve been consistently getting busier and busier,” Mr Duncan said.

“A lot of people were early this year which was great. So many people are really excited and want to get to Christmas.”

Among the popular new trends are a beach themed Christmas and Australiana decorations.

“The beach trend has been massive this year,” Mr Duncan said.

“Rose gold has slowed down and one of the big surprises has been the Australiana collection... there has also been a massive swing towards glass ornaments.”

The West End shop has always seen a swing back to the ‘traditional’ Christmas look.

“Traditional Christmas is your golds and red. Here we try to take the traditional Christmas aspect and modernise it,” Mr Duncan said.

“Candyland is always a big mover and this year we have a fabulous range of collectables for the Christmas collectors.”

Mr Duncan said the last weekend of November and first weekend of December were the ‘big ones’ for decorating.

“Absolutely get in now because this weekend and the next are going to be huge,” he said.

“We work really hard to keep our prices down and we have items here from $2. I’m proud to say 95 per cent of our product is the same price it was last year.”

That Christmas Shop has been operating since late 2019 and is going from strength to strength.

“This year we’ve got a brand new room, so we’ve doubled in size,” Mr Duncan said.

“We make all the wreathes and garlands in the shop ourselves. This year we did the decorations at Watermark and they look great.”
