The parents of a Cowboys fan currently recovering in Queensland Children’s Hospital say the community effort to get their daughter to Magic Round has “reignited” her love for the game.

The Hanney family have been in Brisbane since March when their 18-year-old daughter, Alex Hanney, underwent major leg surgery to realign both her legs.

Alex was born with Coffin-Siris Syndrome, a rare genetic condition affecting physical and intellectual development.

Mother Peta Hanney had scraped together tickets to the Cowboy’s Magic Round game at Suncorp Stadium, hoping to make it a bright spot in the recovery process, only to realise she’d been scammed by a fake Facebook seller.

A desperate plea on the Cowboys Stampede Facebook fan page for any spare tickets caught the attention of hundreds – including Cowboys CEO Jeff Reibel who with the help of Suncorp Stadium was able to secure wheelchair accessible seating for Alex and her family the day before kick-off.

“Alex absolutely loved her experience at Suncorp last night,” Ms Hanney said.

“I am so glad that she was afforded the opportunity, as it was exactly what we needed.”

Ms Hanney said her daughter’s hospital room was now “adorned with team flags and magic round merch”.

“Alex is planning to go to the Dolphins v Cowboys game in July to celebrate her birthday. Last night reignited her love for the game,” she said.

“An enormous thankyou to Jeff Reibel, the Cowboys and Suncorp for making it happen for us. We are so very grateful.”

The family were able to capture the full spectacle of the nail biting Warriors v Cowboys clash, but didn’t stay for the following match as they had to return to the hospital.

“But we’ll be tuning in to watch Sunday’s games from the ward,” Ms Hanney said.
