Semi-auto rifle seized in Townsville, four arrested

Police have seized a semiautomatic rifle from a group during a midnight arrest in Kirwan. See what else they were found with.

A group of four adults have been arrested, allegedly in possession of a semiautomatic rifle in Townsville.

The group, aged between 18 and 30, are also alleged to have stolen a Mitsubishi Triton and are expected to face court in the coming days.

Senior Sergeant Curtis Zealey said about midnight on Tuesday, the Triton which had been stolen about five days ago was located in the driveway of a house on Hudson St, Kirwan.

The police rapid action patrol group boxed the car in, arresting two females and two males aged between 18 and 30, Senior Sergeant Zealey said.

The four people would be jointly charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm and possession of dangerous drugs, namely cannabis.

The firearm was a “highly illegal” semiautomatic rifle and police also found ammunition and magazines, Senior Sergeant Zealey said.

The dark grey Triton was the only outstanding stolen vehicle of about eight in Townsville which was recovered during the night and morning of May 15 to May 16, the Senior Sergeant said.

There were four or five reported break and enters overnight, he said.
