TRUCKS with additional grandstands will roll into Townsville in preparation for Origin Game One.
About 2000 additional seats will be installed at the open end of the stadium with thousands of people expected to descend on the city for the game.
Queensland Country Bank Stadium manager Tom Kimball said trucks from Sydney and Brisbane would arrive on Wednesday night in preparation, with construction to get underway on Thursday.
He said with only a week to prepare, the team would be working around the clock to get the stadium ready.
“In the stadium design, there was scope for additional seats, but with such late notice and turn around to make sure the best possible screening experience for our fans, we can put in 2000 seats for this event,” Mr Kimball said.
“This is a world class stadium, we’ve got a world-class team, we’ve got the support of the government, we’re ready to go.”
Hands on Wildlife owner and long-term Cowboys fan Dam Bamblett said this was an exciting experience for Townsville.
“As a business owner, I’ve not been able to give myself time off to go down to Brisbane so to have Origin come to me is fantastic,” he said.
“We do big events really well here in Townsville, V8s, we rock it, Elton John, all that sort of stuff, Tim McGraw, a could of years ago he came here to Townsville, and on that tour we pulled the biggest crowd for Tim McGraw.”
Mr Bamblett, better known as Ranger Dan, said if anyone was worried about the Townsville experience, they only had to look at the weather on the first day of winter.
