The Townsville prison was placed in lockdown after two men climbed onto the roof.

A Queensland Corrective Services spokesman confirmed two men imprisoned in the Townsville Correctional Centre climbed onto the roof of a unit block this morning.

“As is standard practice, the centre was placed into lockdown to ensure the safety and security of the prison,” he said.

“The prisoners came down of their own accord after 20 minutes and were escorted to the Detention Unit.”

Prison sources told the Townsville Bulletin the men were being taken back to secure accommodation when they climbed.

The lockdown disrupted a number of video-link sentences that were due to take place in the Townsville Magistrates Court today.
