Qld traffic: Man, 69, killed in head-on collision near Cairns

A 69-year-old man has died in a head-on crash that closed the Bruce Highway south of Cairns late into Friday night.

The police Forensic Crash Unit will investigate a fatal two-vehicle crash south of Cairns on Friday afternoon.

A 69-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at Damper Creek which closed the Bruce Highway for many hours.

A black Mitsubishi Lancer and white Mitsubishi Triton collided head-on near Five Mile Creek Rd about 4pm.

The 69-year-old man was the passenger of the black vehicle.

His driver, a 31-year-old man, was airlifted to Townsville University Hospital in a serious condition.

The driver of the Triton, a 44-year-old woman, was transported to Ingham Hospital in a stable condition.

The Forensic Crash Unit is now appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage which may assist their investigations.

The Bruce Highway was still closed at 10.30pm, more than six hours after the crash, but was expected to reopen overnight.

UPDATE:

A stretch of highway where a serious crash took place at about 4pm on Friday remains closed.

One patient in stable condition has been transported to Ingham Hospital, while another in serious condition has been transported to Townsville University Hospital following a two-vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway between Ingham and Cardwell.

EARLIER:

EMERGENCY services have responded to a crash on the Bruce Highway involving two vehicles.

Emergency services are currently assessing the condition of three patients, with one in a critical condition and one in a serious condition.

It’s understood that the crash occurred shortly after 4pm, between Ingham and Cardwell near Damper Creek and Five Mile Creek.

Queensland Police, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and Queensland Ambulance Services are on scene at the crash.

The Forensic Crash Unit are understood to be responding to the scene.

Queensland Ambulance Service have advised drivers to avoid the area.
