It took less than an hour for thousands of early P!nk tickets to be snapped up by eager North Queensland fans.
Tickets officially go on sale to the general public at 1pm Friday via Ticketmaster, but three pre-sales allowed thousands of fans access to seats a day earlier.
Townsville Enterprise CEO Claudia Brumme-Smith was stoked with the pre-sale response as the Ticketmaster website went into overdrive with fans buying tickets to the US superstar’s March 23 concert at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
“For us it was really important to have a really strong start because we wanted to show the promoter that Townsville is a worthwhile destination to bring the right artists — and high profile artists — to,” Ms Brumme-Smith said.
“While we knew there would only be 35,000 tickets, we know people will unfortunately miss out but the good news story here must be we absolutely presented an image and hunger for these artists. What it will now bring is more artists who take notice of a regional concert going gangbusters.”
Ms Brumme-Smith looked forward to seeing even more tickets fly out the door when the general public sale goes live at 1pm.
“The demand (Thursday) was so huge that it shows we’re craving these types of events so this is the best PR we could give our city by lining up and being really excited about it.”
Ahead of the final ticket release, TEL revealed the months of hard work behind the scenes that made the major concert happen.
Earlier this year, Townsville Enterprise and Townsville City Council commissioned research partners The Lab Insights and Strategy to undertake an analysis of online sentiment and surveying across the Townsville community and in key intra- and interstate visitor markets.
Ms Brumme-Smith said the data collated suggested that P!nk would be a success for Townsville.
“P!nk was one of the key artists named by survey participants, providing city leaders and the promoters with confidence that the event would turn Townsville into an absolute ‘Funhouse’,” Ms Brumme-Smith said.
“Having access to insights like this is critical in helping to secure acts like P!nk, but it also forms the foundation of this city’s major events strategy into the future.”
The Lab managing director Amanda Windus said this was the first time the region had undertaken such a significant research project to understand the community’s demand for future events.
“Approximately 5400 data points were used during this research project and will now be taken to inform the city’s events attraction and development needs,” Ms Windus said.
She added more than 80% of survey participants agreed Townsville was well positioned to host more major events, with “a thirst for more live performances”.
“It is so positive to see a city like Townsville work collaboratively and using these insights to get results like P!nk.”
Townsville City Council Community and Cultural Committee Chair Ann-Maree Greaney said 62% of Townsville residents had attended on average two major events outside of Townsville in the past two years.
“Having international and world-class events on our doorstep makes it so much more affordable and achievable for locals to enjoy,” she said.
A Ticketmaster spokesperson said an event like this delivered so much for regional areas.
“We’ve not seen such popularity and excitement for an event at Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium since the venue launched, with (Thursday’s) onsale surpassing demand for previous major events,” they said.
For anyone who misses out on tickets, keep checking Live Nation or Ticketmaster’s social media for any further ticket releases or announcements.
Ticketmaster reminded fans they are the only authorised ticketing agent for P!nk at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
“The inherent risk of purchasing unverified tickets is that the venue cannot guarantee the validity of tickets sold through unauthorised third parties as there are some instances where tickets are falsified or duplicated and resold multiple times,” the spokesperson said.
