Townsville hotels and caravan parks are offering rooms “without the P!nk tax” as fans from neighbouring regions book their weekend away to watch the US singer rock Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
This week, the Bulletin reported dozens of Airbnbs and some hotels had inflated their nightly rates — with one even listed at $26,000 for the Saturday night show on March 23, 2024.
But those determined to welcome visitors with open arms and lighter wallets have joined forces to offer affordable rates for the P!nk bonanza, with a second show added on the Friday night.
Townsville Enterprise CEO Claudia Brumme-Smith said price increases and minimum stays on accommodation in high demand periods happens for major events anywhere around the world.
“Price increases over major events is expected, but it is positive to see majority doing the right thing and offering affordable rates for visitors over the P!nk weekend,” Mrs Brumme-Smith said.
“We have put a call out to our accommodation operators and created a page on the townsvillenorthqueensland.com.au website to help visitors find rooms under $400 per night for the P!nk weekend.”
She said securing P!nk was a major win for our city and to keep attracting these major events, accommodation options were critical for promoters when choosing the destinations to host them.
“We’ve already seen innovation across our region with Sealink offering additional late-night ferries to meet demand for Magnetic Island,” Ms Brumme-Smith said.
NQ Caravan Rentals caused a stir on social media this week when they spruiked their business as having the “same price 365 days a year”.
“Townsville accommodation available: Without the P!NK tax,” they posted on their Facebook page with a #supportlocal hashtag.
So far on the special Pink in Townsville accommodation page, the cheapest rooms on offer are at the Spanish Lace Motor Inn on Bowen Rd at just $200 a night (min 2 nights) or Castle Crest Motel in Rose Street from $240/night (min 2 nights).
If you want to take advantage of the special late night ferry, Island Leisure Resort in Nelly Bay on Magnetic Island have rooms from $169/night (min 2 nights).
Meanwhile, the pre-sale for P!nk’s second and final show in Townsville again proved popular on Thursday, with the final tickets going on sale at 12.30pm Friday via Ticketmaster.
If you’re a tourist business and have accommodation available for under $400 a night for the P!nk weekend, you can register your property at www.townsvillenorthqueensland.com.au/campaign/pink-in-townsville
