The generosity of North Queenslanders has again shone through after a first run of Cowboys’ charity jerseys launched in honour of late star player Carl Webb sold out, with a second run on jerseys now on sale.
Cowboys CEO Jeff Reibel confirmed that its 2024 Charity Jersey raising money to fight Motor Neurone Disease had smashed club records on its way to selling 850 units in less than two weeks.
“On the day that it launched we actually sold 650 jerseys and then by the end of the game against the Broncos on August 10, all the stock was exhausted,” he said.
“So we decided that because of the popularity of the jersey, because of what the jersey meant we’ve gone back and done a second run.”
Mr Reibel said sales of the additional 650 jerseys were again strong, keeping pace with purchases of the new 2025 kit celebrating the club’s 30th anniversary.
The retro jersey, based on the iconic bullhorn design from 2005 when Webb first joined the club, features a traditional style collar and the hard man’s player number beneath the Cowboys’ emblem.
It commemorates his 115-game contribution to the club, the majority of his almost 190 NRL appearances.
Mr Reibel said the Cowboys would be making a minimum donation of $20,000 to the Carl Webb Foundation that was established to help fight MND that had cut short the player’s life in late 2023.
“In 2005, Carl joined the club, a fellow named Johnathan Thurston joined the club and we played in our first-ever Grand Final … we didn’t get the choccies but 10 years later in 2015 we won our first premiership.”
Mr Reibel said the popularity of the jersey, available for sale at the club on online, was not only in the attractive design but also the charitable nature of North Queenslanders.
“It’s an iconic jersey that people look back to and remember the likes of Carl and Johnathan but also Matthew Bowen, Paul Bowman, Luke O’Donnell and Paul Rauhihi, so there’s some nostalgia there,” he said.
“But (also) people of North Queensland want to get behind and remember one of their own in Carl and what he did for our club and repay that … by allowing us to invest in his foundation.
“We are so fortunate about the passion and support that we receive.”
