A TOWNSVILLE-based Youth With A Mission charity ship will return to Papua New Guinea this weekend with hopes of never returning to our shores.
MV YWAM PNGis a registered health facility in PNG and acts as a mothership, helping to support multiple teams working ashore simultaneously.
The outreaches in PNG were suspended in March 2020 following the COVID-19 outbreak, with the ship provided free wharfage by the Port of Townsville.
Anna Scott is one of the crew travelling on the ship in what will be her 12th mission, and will work with healthcare teams and in communications. She said it was special to see health and hope being restored to the local community.
“Last year was unexpected, and to have the ship here for 10 months when we’re usually up there in PNG, so it’s just amazing to be heading back,” she said.
“The ship was originally purchased for PNG – that’s what the vision is, to help establish healthy communities – so to have the ship there has been the dream for a long time.
“We’ve managed to roll out one of our certificate trainings and we had our very first certificate III in dental assistance student graduate a few months ago, and that’s a profession that’s really new in the country.”
