Ninety Townsville women will spend their Saturday night rallying to encourage others to get checked for skin cancer.
Molly Malone’s Irish Pub on Flinders Street will play host to a Girls Night In tonight.
The sold-out event hopes to raise $5000 for the Cancer Council for Women’s Health.
Organiser Tanya Geyser said the night was also about supporting those battling cancer.
“We are all connected to those who are currently undergoing treatment for cancer or have had treatment and it just felt like it is happening to just too many people,” she said.
“We all need to talk more and make each other accountable for seeking advice on our health if things just don’t seem right and hopefully with early detection a better long-term outcome will be achievable.”
Townsville skin cancer doctor and guest speaker Helena Rosengren has spent her career lobbying to stop the loss of lives to skin cancer.
Dr Rosengren said she relished the opportunity to speak at the event.
“Despite being curable if caught early enough, melanoma remains the fourth biggest killer (among cancers) in Australia,” she said.
“So I welcome the opportunity to spread awareness regarding skin cancer prevention and detection.”
Dr Rosengren said research had revealed using sunscreen every day decreased the risk of developing melanoma by 50 per cent. Early detection was also crucial.
