A multi-million dollar Townsville housing complex for women in need has been named in honour of a selfless social campaigner.

“The complex has been named in honour of Kate Pemberton for her dedicated work to help people in need and at risk within the local community,” Mundingburra MP Les Walker said.

“She created a social movement called ‘Kate’s Campaign for Change’ to make a difference in the lives of others.”

Construction on the $3.64 million project comprising 12 one-bedroom units in Aitkenvale was finished in mid-2021 and will now be called Kate Pemberton Place.

The complex that provides safe and secure homes is serviced by a lift and has seven units constructed to Gold level and five to Platinum level of Livable Housing Guidelines, meaning they are accessible for people who need mobility aids and are suitable for older people to age in place.

Ms Pemberton is partially verbal, mobilises using a wheelchair and lives with cerebral palsy, epilepsy and cyclic vomiting syndrome.

Mr Walker said that although Ms Pemberton was differently abled, “she has a passion to help others and it is great to see this recognition of her contribution to Townsville.”

“Kate’s Campaign for Change is a social movement which works directly with vulnerable people at risk of or experiencing homelessness here in Townsville,” he said.

“Relying solely on donations and the assistance of volunteers, the aim is to donate a range of “care packages” through local not-for-profit organisations to assist those who are in-need and at-risk within the local community.”

Ms Pemberton continues to work with the Townsville City Council on issues of equality and inclusion.

Anyone who needs housing assistance can contact the Townsville Housing Service Centre on (07) 47248500 during business hours or call the 24/7 Homeless Hotline on 1800474753.
