A Teddy called Freddie helped a boy through one of the scariest moments of his young life.

Harry Jurgens, 6, was rushed to the Magnetic Island Health Service Centre last weekend after a nasty fall at a restaurant left him with a 5cm gash to the back of his head.

Harry’s mum Alex Jurgens said when they arrived at the clinic her son was greeted by a bright face.

“Harry was a little bit scared but he got to choose a teddy and I said what’s the teddy’s name and he said it is Freddie the Teddy,” she said.

“Harry held on tight to Freddie while he was being looked after and it made such a difference when he was there.”

The Year 1 student said Freddie was now his best friend.

“He is special because I got him from a special hospital,” he said.

“He is my favourite colours. He made me be brave.”

The Magnetic Island Crafters group donated hand-knit teddies to the Magnetic Island Health Service Centre for the first time this year to help little patients soothe away their fears.

Freddy the Teddy’s maker Fran Lowe has been knitting for 60 years and said it took four hours to make a teddy.

She said she was overjoyed when Harry called her to say thank you for making the teddy.

“It is just wonderful to hear Harry loves Freddie and to get feedback like that,” she said.

“I know the clinic always gives the kids the teddies and they tell the kids, ‘I want you to look after this teddy while I look after you’.”

Ms Lowe said members of the Magnetic Island Crafters Group knitted around 400 teddies a year and donated the soft toys to local health services.

Harry even picked out a teddy for his big sister Evelyn who she has named ‘Lavender’.
