Should Cannabis be legal in Australia?

A WOMAN has claimed she sourced almost 1kg of cannabis after her prescription for medical cannabis oil did not help control her conditions.

Police located two vacuumed sealed bags containing 460g of cannabis each.

The court heard, King declared the cannabis as medical marijuana but could not provide any proof or a prescription to police.

Police prosecutor Peter Obermayer said the prosecution did not allege there was a commerciality aspect to the amount of drugs located.

King pleaded guilty to three charges including possessing dangerous drugs.

Defence lawyer Bradley Searston told Magistrate Ken Taylor his client was a full-time carer to four family members and suffered from stress, migraines, headaches and had trouble sleeping.

Mr Searston presented to the court a shipping packing slip to her pharmacist for cannabis oil and said King had taken her health into her own hands.

“While she hoped her prescription would have be the solution to her health problems, this did not prove to be the case,” he said.

“She therefore unfortunately purchased cannabis in the quantity that she possessed at a lesser cost overall than smaller quantities of cannabis.”

Mr Searston said King’s general practitioner was currently reviewing her prescription for medical cannabis oil.

Magistrate Taylor fined King $600.

Convictions were not recorded.
