A man has died after he was pulled from the water unresponsive at Riverway Lagoons. LATEST
Police are investigating the death of a man at Riverway Lagoons this morning.
Emergency services were called to the public pool after they received reports of an unresponsive man being pulled from the lagoon on Sporting Drive about 11am.
Attempts were made to revive the man, 39, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are investigating the incident.
A witness said the shocking incident was witnessed by a number of people using the Townsville City Council-owned public-swimming facility, including children.
Townsville City Council CEO Joe McCabe confirmed the man was pulled from the water in an unresponsive state at Riverway Lagoon at 11am on Thursday.
“Despite the best efforts of lifeguards and emergency services, the man has since passed away,” he said in a statement at 2.30pm.
He said the council was working with authorities investigating the incident and “is providing support to those involved”.
“Our sincere condolences are with the friends, family and loved ones of the man involved in today’s tragic incident.”
Mayor Nick Dametto, speaking on behalf of the people of Townsville, offered “our most sincere condolences and prayers to the family and friends of the man who was involved in today’s tragic incident”.
Riverway Lagoons will remain closed until further notice.
