Age is no barrier for a Townsville bodybuilder who has toppled competitors two decades younger than her to fulfil her dream of being a superhero.
Diehard Wonder Woman fan Paula Mandl trained six days a week for 10 months to enter the Australian Natural Bodybuilding Queensland State Titles 2020 in November.
She took home first place in the Bikini Model 45+ age category and overall Bikini Competitor across all age groups sporting a custom-made Wonder Woman bikini.
As well as taking out two first places, Ms Mandl walked away with third place in themewear and international swimwear categories.
Ms Mandl said it was her goal for the year to take on the persona of her idol.
“I am a massive Wonder Woman fan. I have always loved Lynda Carter and I just wanted to get up on the stage and be Wonder Woman and I managed to do that,” she said.
“It was definitely a kind of out-of-body experience. It was surreal thinking, ‘I am actually getting up there and for this moment I am Wonder Woman’.”
The 45-year-old lost 8kg and 7 per cent body fat lifting weights six days a week.
With the help of her trainer, Adam Pete from OnPoint LifeStyle, they worked on changing Ms Mandl’s body composition even after gyms closed due to coronavirus.
It was the first time Mr Pete had trained a female bodybuilder competitor and he said he was proud of how far they had come together.
“It has been a pleasure to train her and watch her progress and she turned out more muscular and in better shape than the actual actor who plays Wonder Woman.”
