Townsville Gem and Mineral Show set to hold annual show at new North Ward location

The city is set to sparkle, with the Townsville Gem and Mineral Club ready for their upcoming annual show at a brand new, bigger location.

The city is set to sparkle, with the Townsville Gem and Mineral Club ready for their upcoming annual show at a brand new, bigger location.

This year will see the popular event move from their club workshop to the Townsville Sports Precinct in North Ward, with thousands expected to attend over two days.

Featuring a variety of gems and minerals on display and for sale from more than 70 vendors, as well as jewellery, children’s activities, food trucks and raffles, the club said the event will be a great family day out.

Attendees will also be able to participate in oyster shucking for pearls, sandpit fossicking and gold panning.

Founding member of the Townsville Gem and Mineral Club Gloria Burns has been involved with the club for 60 years and said that each member had their own favourite gem or mineral which include blue topaz, agates, opals, sapphires and garnets.

Club secretary Teresa Hudson said the club was home to more than 180 dedicated and passionate gem and mineral collectors.

“Our members come along to our workshop here and use a variety of techniques to produce beautiful items for. ”

Ms Hudson said gems and minerals have grown in popularity over the last few years, with the annual show getting bigger and bigger each year.

“It’s a great, diverse event. There is something for everyone, people who are beginners to the world of gems and minerals as well as those that love buying, collecting and learning about them,” she said.

The Townsville Gem and Mineral Show will be held on July 20 from 9am to 4pm and July 21 from 9am to 2pm at the Townsville Sports Precinct, North Ward.

Tickets are $5, with kids under 12 free.
