The construction timeline for a major sports stadium is likely to be delayed as the region’s biggest basketball association had a record-breaking year with close to 12,000 players.

The construction of a new major sports stadium could be delayed by several months, new State Government documents reveal, as the region’s biggest basketball association enjoyed a record-breaking year with nearly 12,000 competitors.

The facility in Mt Duneed is due to be completed by early 2027, documents provided to this masthead show.

The builder of the new facility, which will boast a “highball stadium” featuring six courts, a regional level gymnastics space, dance hall and car parking, is expected to be announced in May.

The “anticipated date for construction commencement” is also listed as May this year.

However, the dates are indicative in the report and may change.

Geelong United Basketball (GUB) chief executive Mark Neeld told this masthead in the middle of 2023 he had a commitment in writing the stadium would be fully operational by November, 2026.

A Victorian Government spokesperson said earlier this year the project, set for 173-213 Ghazeepore Rd, Mount Duneed, was “progressing well (and) planning is well underway”.

It comes as netball courts are proposed to be removed from Kardinia Park under a new masterplan and potentially be relocated to the new stadium.

The Geelong Central Netball Association declined to comment.

It comes as GUB saw a record-breaking 11,626 players taking part across the region last year.

The association’s chair Jess Chappell said it had made “substantial progress” in discussions with all levels of government to secure new and improved facilities, its annual report reveals.

“Under our CEO’s leadership, we are leading advocacy in both public and private sectors that will support our growing community and elevate the basketball experience for all,” Chappell said in the report.

“Sound financial management and strong governance remain at the core of our operations.

“This year, we continued strengthening our financial position, ensuring long-term sustainability while making strategic investments to enhance programs and facilities.

“The future of Geelong United Basketball is brighter than ever.”

Chief executive Mark Neeld said it had been a “defining period” for the association, marked by a “very favourable financial outcome”.

“Our most notable accomplishment this year is our successful financial position,” Neeld said.

“We have not only traded a profit but also eliminated carry-over losses.

“Our financial performance now positions us for long-term success, allowing us to reinvest in key initiatives that will drive prosperity.”
