Sydney’s newest city on the doorstep of the Western Sydney Airport will be named Bradfield in honour of the engineer who shaped the Harbour City.

It comes after six years of campaigns by The Daily Telegraph including an annual Bradfield Oration, calling for more resources for the city’s west including the airport city.

The new Bradfield city will be considered Greater Sydney’s “third city”, alongside Parramatta and inner Sydney itself.

“Like Bradfield, the city named in his honour will use engineering, science and technology to shape the future,” Western Sydney Minister Stuart Ayres said.

The suburb is more than 100ha and sits north of Bringelly. It will have some residential elements.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced the name alongside Mr Ayers this morning, saying Bradfield will be a key economic driver and bring 200,000 new jobs.

“Bradfield was a renowned engineer who designed and oversaw the construction of both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney’s original railway network,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“The name Bradfield is synonymous with delivering game-changing infrastructure and it sets the right tone for the area we have referred to as the Aerotropolis Core until now.”

Tony Shepherd, chair of the Bradfield Oration Board, keeps a copy of Bradfield’s original plan for Sydney in his home, which helped inspire the first Daily Telegraph Bradfield Oration.

“The creation of three cities and the massive development of investment in transport is a major evolution of the Bradfield plan — the first major transformation of planning in the city since the original plan in 1916,” Mr Shepherd said.

“The Bradfield oration brought Bradfield’s contribution back into regular discussion in Sydney.”

John Bradfield’s grandson Jim said the naming was an honour.

“It is a great honour that my grandfather’s name continues to be associated with major infrastructure developments in and around Sydney,” Mr Bradfield said.

“We hope his achievements will inspire generations to come, and help shape the future of our urban landscape.”

The name was selected after the community was invited to have a say, with a panel settling on the final decision which will now be taken to the Geographical Names Board.
