Territorial 4 metre crocodile relocated from popular NT fishing spot after safety concerns

A routine fishing trip at a popular NT boat ramp nearly took a terrifying turn when an unexpected visitor made itself known.

A 4.03m saltwater crocodile with a territorial streak has been removed from the Big Horse Creek boat ramp on the Victoria River after locals raised safety concerns.

“Local police from Timber Creek assisted Parks and Wildlife yesterday in removing a 4.03m saltwater problem crocodile from the Big Horse Creek boat ramp, which was stalking recreational fishos while launching and retrieving their boats,” Acting senior sergeant Nick Allen said.

Timber Creek residents had been keeping an eye on the large reptile, reporting its aggressive behaviour towards fishers.

With fears mounting, NT police assisted Parks and Wildlife Rangers in relocating the animal.

After the capture, students from Timber Creek Primary School gathered for a crocodile awareness talk.

“The Parks and Wildlife education team in attendance gave a crocodile awareness talk, which was very well received by the students of Timber Creek Primary School,” Acting senior sergeant Allen said.

“No two days are the same out at Timber Creek and we would urge travellers and locals alike to always be CrocWise.”

With recent wet conditions in the area, acting senior sergeant Allen also advised motorists to be prepared for changing road conditions.

“We would also urge everyone in the area to drive to the current wet conditions, as an unprepared motorist can easily get bogged this time of year.”

The Victoria River is known for its crocodile population, and this incident serves as a reminder of the dangers in the Top End’s waterways.
