TASMANIA’S arts community is paying tribute to renowned and respected artist Peter Barraclough who was always up for a chat at his Salamanca Place studio.
Barraclough, 84, who left the UK bound for Tasmania in the 1970s, died this week.
Salamanca Arts Centre CEO Joe Bugden said in his studio adjacent to the courtyard Peter regularly entertained and engaged with the public as they wandered through the Arts Centre.
“His was a working but open studio and the public was always welcome to come in and discuss his work,” Mr Bugden said.
“As an artist Peter captured the essence of the local urban landscape and its humanity and his works adorn many private residences.
“Peter was very popular amongst us all at Salamanca Arts Centre. Staff and other artists were extremely fond of him.
“He is already being greatly missed. And the admin office is that much quieter without his banter and his positive presence.”
Another Hobart artist said Peter was the “glue” that held the arts community together.
“A Yorkshireman, a Tasmanian and a good friend to so many,” she said.
“Peter you were an artist, a musician, and the glue that held us all together. We will miss popping into your studio for a chat, you always had something interesting to impart.”
Curate Art and Design said Barraclough was a remarkable artist and wonderful human being.
“And what an amazing legacy he has left behind,” the studio said.
Barraclough was born in 1938 and studied and taught art there before arriving in Tasmania.
For a while he lived overlooking the Three Sisters islands on the Old Coast Rd between Penguin and Ulverstone and took much inspiration from the scenery.
He was the head of Burnie College of TAFE School of Art in the 1980s and became a full time painter in 1985.
