More than 33,000 premises will now receive an internet connection boost in Tasmania, with three Hobart suburbs leading the way in the most available upgrades.
The Australian Government has invested around $2.4b as part of an election commitment to expand full-fibre access to a further 1.5 million homes and businesses across Australia, including 660,000 in regional areas.
Part of this funding will support the implementation of Australia’s broadband network NBN to 33,000 properties, that can start making the switch to internet that is 18 times faster than the average copper broadband connection.
Fibre networks also provide families with a more reliable connection that can end up saving money when compared to other internet plans on average.
Of the 33,000 homes that can start making the switch, Howrah, Sandy Bay, Longford, Devonport and Rokeby have the highest number of available upgrades.
Federal Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland said the government is committed to getting more Australians access to better, faster broadband.
“Our strong investment ensures more and more households have access to this technology – unlocking greater social inclusion and economic productivity through faster, more reliable internet,” she said.
“I look forward to more families and businesses across Tasmania and the country benefiting from this higher speed option.”
The government has also invested a further $480m in NBN Fixed Wireless and NBN Sky Muster networks to boost internet speeds in rural and regional areas.
