Footy fans have frantically snapped up tickets to the historic launch of Tasmania’s long-awaited AFL team, leaving the fledgling club “overwhelmed” by huge demand.

Six free launch events are being held across the state on March 18, with registrations opening on Monday at 12pm and tickets capped at two per person.

Within three minutes, the Hobart launch at the Theatre Royal was completely booked out, while tickets to the Launceston, Devonport, and Oatlands events were exhausted within two hours.

Tasmania Football Club executive director Kath McCann said there were still some tickets left for Queenstown and St Helens as at Monday afternoon, despite “steady uptake”.

“The Tasmania Football Club has been overwhelmed by community interest in your club’s historic statewide launch events on March 18,” she said.

“Due to the sheer demand for the Hobart event, the club is exploring establishing a second Southern launch event site for March 18.

“A live stream will also be set up from one of the events to ensure all Tasmanians can be part of Tasmania Football Club’s historic reveal.”

The name of the state’s AFL and AFLW teams, as well as the highly anticipated guernsey designs, are expected to be revealed on the day and a founding member offer will be made available, representing the first opportunity for Tasmanians to join the new club.

Lizzie Hay, of Howrah, was one of the lucky few to secure a ticket to the Hobart event and made sure she had all bases covered when it came to registering.

“I had my phone and my iPad going, poised and ready [at 12pm],” she said.

“And I was locked in and ready to hit the button.”

Ms Hay’s son, Jasper, 16, plays for the Tasmania Devils development side, and she said she hoped he would one day have the opportunity to play for our AFL team.

“Jasper’s got Devils training at [the] time [of the launch] so it depends whether they’re going to let the boys have it off but I’m hoping that Jasper might be able to come with me,” she said.

“I think there are so many passionate football supporters in Tasmania. And when the 19th licence was announced for Tasmania, I know so many people who were so excited to be included.

“I just think it’s going to be a historic day and it’s going to be fantastic. I’m so pleased that I get the opportunity to be a part of it.”

Nick Finlay, the vice-president of the Oatlands District Football Association, said he was thrilled to be going to the launch event at the Oatlands RSL and that a Tasmanian team would provide talent pathways for young players and give them “something to aspire to”.

“Local footy needs a bit of an injection, really, and I think this is the perfect way for football to be revitalised in the state,” he said.
