Tasmania’s Taste looking for fresh talent for this summer

The hunt is on for the best of Tasmania’s producers, performers and providores as organisers begin planning the Taste of Summer.

Taste of Summer on the lookout for new talent in this year's festival

Co-founder of Nepalese food stall Ekka Rabin Sapkota said the Taste of Summer is the perfect avenue for producers looking to get a leg up in business.

“For us, we want to open a restaurant one day and share our Nepalese food and culture with Tasmania, so the Taste is the perfect place to network and brand ourselves,” he said.

Mr Sapkota and his brother Nabin opened Ekka at last year’s Taste of Summer, since appearing at DARK MOFO’s Winter Feast.

The brothers said it was an easy choice to return after enjoying the stallholder experience last year.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase to Tasmania and Hobart what we do and show off our Nepalese food,” Mr Sapkota said.

“We did last year chickpea and pumpkin masala to get to our vegetarian and vegan customers, and we did masala braised lamb, which was super heat, so we are tempted to keep it as it is, having said that we’ve got a few different ideas.”

Taste of Summer festival curator Jo Cook is on the hunt for 80 innovative Tasmanian stallholders and entertainers just like the Sapkota brothers to feature in this year’s festival.

“We’re looking for new stallholders and existing stallholders, people with fabulous businesses that really showcase what Tasmania is all about which is beautiful wine, craft beers, lots of seafood, beautiful beef and Tasmania’s fantastic berries and fruits,” she said.

“Last year, we had over 85,000 people come through the Taste of Summer so we’re expecting pretty good numbers again this year.”

The Taste has new dates for the festival, running eight days straight from Saturday, December 28 to Saturday, January 4 to align with key events like the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

Performers and stallholders can apply at the Taste of Summer website before Sunday, September 15.
