Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff: Last Liberal standing says he’ll fight for his state

Jeremy Rockliff — the last Liberal to head a government in Australia — says he has a good working relationship with his counterparts interstate.

Liberal Party will be doing a lot of 'soul searching' following election loss in NSW

PREMIER Jeremy Rockliff says he is too busy working for Tasmanians to reflect much on becoming the lone state or federal Liberal leader at the head of a government in Australia.

Mr Rockliff found himself the last Liberal standing after NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet was tipped out by voters at the weekend.

At an event showcasing government progress in providing housing for women in crisis on Monday, the Premier said he did not feel like a member of an endangered species.

“Every day I get up and go to work excited about the many great things that we can do and are doing for Tasmanians, growing our economy and providing for a caring community,” he said.

“As it happens, we’re at an event today providing for both, I work well with the Prime Minister, I look forward to meeting Chris [Minns] the New South Wales Premier.”

He said he would continue to work with whoever was in power federally or interstate to gain the best outcomes for Tasmanians.

“Tasmania, of course will have a strong voice around the national cabinet table, a voice that is listened to and respected,” he said.

“We expect, of course, Tasmania to be given absolutely our fair share and the conversations that I’ve had with the prime minister since he’s become prime minister and I’ve been Premier, have been very cooperative.”

Mr Rockliff said he would work to ensure his party stayed in office by doing the best job he could every day, by listening to people and delivering results where it counted.

“We are supporting the growth of our economy, keeping people employed and supporting vulnerable Tasmanians.

“A growing economy funds those essential services that Tasmanians care about housing, health, education, public safety.

“We have a lot to be proud of here in Tasmania. We have record low unemployment. We have decreasing waiting lists.

“We have key partnerships with stakeholders across the health system.

Of course, we’ve got record an investment into education. We’re getting the fundamentals right.”
