Tasmanian government rebates and discounts to help save money

There are lots of rebates and discounts Tasmanians can get right now to save thousands of dollars. See the full list on how you can save on day-to-day expenses.

Tasmanians may be able to make their money stretch further with support the state government.

A host of rebates and concessions are available to help cover the cost of utilities, council rates, vehicle registration and educational costs – to name a few.

These savings could add up to hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, for people who are eligible.

See the list below for how you can save on day-to-day living expenses.

ENERGY & UTILITIES

Tasmanians may be eligible for a daily discount on their electricity bill of $1.57 a day, for the year. In addition, the Tasmanian Government is providing a Winter Bill Buster credit of $119 to all eligible people in 2022.

Eligible pensioners can get $56 Heating Allowance a year.

TasWater customers may be able to get a $211.50 discount on water and sewerage charges.

Tasmanians could save more than $200 on water and sewerage charges.

HEALTH

Those who need to run lifesaving equipment, such as a continuous positive airways pressure machine or dialysis machines, may be eligible to receive a daily discount to help with power bills. The rate varies depending on the machine but can be has high as $2.19 a day for a phototherapy machine. Conditions apply and it needs to be certified by the person’s doctor.

Similarly, people who have specific medical conditions and need heating or cooling to manage may be eligible for a discount of 47 cents a day.

Families may be able to get support to help with the cost of children’s sport.

Ticket to Play provides eligible families support to help with the cost of being involved in sports, such as registration fees. Two vouchers worth up to $100 each will be issued for each child, which may be used on different activities or combined to pay for one. Conditions apply.

Eligible Tasmanian veterans may apply for a $100 voucher to help pay for gym or sport club registrations.

EDUCATION

Low income families may be able to apply for the Student Assistance Scheme to help cover cost of school fees. The School Uniform Exceptional Assistance Scheme is also available for buying school uniforms.

Students who live more than 5km from the nearest school or bus stop servicing that school may be eligible for an allowance to cover transport costs.

The Tasmanian Government has a range of rebates and concessions to help with education-related costs.

The Student Assistance Scheme provides eligible families with support to cover fees for students in kindergarten to year 12.

Eligible students at TasTAFE may be able to have their fees waived in full or discounted. Conditions apply.

TasTAFE students with children may be able to get reimbursed up to 25 per cent of childcare costs to a maximum of $400 a student each year.

TRANSPORT

There are public transport concessions for eligible residents including students and pensioners.

Pension cardholders who living on the Bass Strait islands can get a 50 per cent rebate on the cost of a return trip to Northern Tasmania. Similarly, eligible Tasmanian resident may be able to get discounts for SeaLink Bruny Island ferry.

People with a permanent and severe disability may be able to a 50 per cent discount on taxis up to $24 a journey, through the Transport Access Scheme. For those needing wheelchair-accessible taxis, the discount is 60 per cent, to a maximum of $30 a ride.

Discounts up to $55.47 may be available on vehicle registration for eligible Tasmanians, with some potentially exempt from paying duty.

Eligible people with a ute or van, but not used for business or trade purposes, may be able to get a 40 per cent rebate on motor tax, as part of their vehicle registration. For people with a disability, the motor tax can be waived on any vehicle, provided it weighs less than 4.5 tonnes.

A concession of $56 is available on compulsory third party insurance for eligible people.

Those under 65 may be able to save up to $56.10 on the cost of their driver’s licence, depending on the length of renewal.

First homebuyers may be able to claim a 50 per cent discount on stamp duty is Tasmania.

HOUSING

First homebuyers may be eligible for a 50 per cent reduction on stamp duty fees on buying an established home, to the value of $600,000.

Similarly, downsizers may be eligible for a 50 per cent discount of transfer fees if the property they are buying is $600,000 or lower and is less than the property being sold. Other stamp duty concession are available.

Low to moderate income earners who are struggling to get or stay in a private rental may be able to get financial help.

Homeowners may be able to get a 30 per cent discount on council rates.
