The first handful of MPs in the new parliament have been declared elected by the Tasmanian Electoral Commission.

Surpluses were thrown and low-polling candidates started to be eliminated as the Hare-Clark distribution of preferences began on Tuesday after the deadline for postal votes to be received passed.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff and his Liberal running mate Gavin Pearce were elected in Braddon, along with Guy Barnett and Jane Howlett in Lyons.

Independent Kristie Johnston was declared elected in Clark and Peter George in Franklin, ahead of Liberal Eric Abetz.

In Bass, Liberal Bridget Archer and Labor’s Janie Finlay were also declared elected.

The count will continue until seven members reach a quota in each of the five seats, a process expected to take until Saturday.
