The man allegedly involved in the stabbing murder of a 42-year-old Mowbray man on Wednesday has fronted the Launceston Magistrates Court as police allege further details to the crime.

Man charged with murder after alleged stabbing incident

Latest 12.15pm: The young man believed to be responsible for the alleged stabbing murder of a 42-year-old Mowbray man appeared at the Launceston Magistrates Court this morning.

The 27-year-old Newnham man William Craig Simmons did not enter a plea.

Magistrate Evan Hughes adjourned proceedings until September 23, at 9.15am.

On Wednesday, emergency crews had been called to a home on Tompsons Lane, Newnham, at 2.45pm following reports of an alleged stabbing.

The alleged victim was taken to the Launceston General Hospital with serious injuries, where it’s reported he died a short time later.

Police charged 27-year-old Newnham man William Craig Simmons with murder following the death of the man.

Speaking outside of court on Thursday, Detective Acting Inspector Jason Jones addressed media to confirm the men were known to each other.

“The man was stabbed once to the chest with a folding knife that has been located and seized by police,” Detective Acting Inspector Jones said.

“We don’t believe it’s drug related and we’re looking into the family violence side of things.

“Both males were known to each other and there was a female plus three teenage youths at the residence at the time of the incident.”

Update August 29, 8am: Police have charged a 27-year-old Newnham man with murder after an alleged stabbing incident at Newnham in the state’s North.

Officers say a 42-year-old Mowbray man died from injuries allegedly sustained during the wounding incident on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say the pair were known to each other.

Police and emergency services confirmed they were called to an address in Tompsons Lane about 2.45pm after reports of an altercation.

The Mowbray man was believed to have been taken to the Launceston General Hospital with serious injuries and has since died.

Officers say a man was quickly taken into custody at the scene.

Police say a report will also be prepared for the Coroner.

3.55pm: Emergency services rushed to a Newnham house after reports a man had been stabbed.

Police have confirmed a person was taken into custody after an alleged wounding incident at Tompsons Lane about 2.45pm on Wednesday.

Officers reported the alleged victim was taken to the Launceston General Hospital with serious injuries.

“A man was quickly taken into custody at the scene,” police said.

“Police remain at the scene and there is no threat to the wider community.”

Person reportedly injured after truck and van collides

3.15pm: A person has been taken to hospital and is reportedly in a serious condition.

Police confirmed they would investigate the incident involving a truck and van at a Wynyard intersection in the state’s North-West at about 1.30pm.

The intersection of Bass Highway and Reservoir Drive has now been cleared after diversions had earlier been put in place.

2pm: Emergency services remain at a serious crash involving a truck and van at a Wynyard intersection.

Police have confirmed one person has reportedly sustained serious injuries.

Diversions are in place on the Bass Highway for motorists to avoid the scene.

1.30pm: Paramedics are on the scene after reports one person is injured from a crash between a truck and van.

Police haven’t reported any further details on who was injured in the incident at the intersection of the Bass Highway and Reservoir Drive at Wynyard.

Officers have asked motorists to slow down and avoid the area until the scene is cleared.

Two charged with alleged crime spree in NW

9am: A 44-year-old man and 16-year-old boy will face court on several charges after police believe the pair to be responsible for a crime spree in the North-West.

Police will allege the pair broke into several businesses on the main shopping strips in Latrobe and Spreyton.

Officers say cash and property were stolen in the Sunday morning stint.

Detectives from Western CIB said they identified the two suspects and undertook searches on Monday.

The man and teenager are believed to have been taken into custody without incident and investigators say the stolen property and cash was recovered.

The man faces charges of burglary x5, attempted burglary, stealing x4 and drug related offences.

The youth was charged with common assault x2, burglary x5, attempted burglary x1, stealing x5 and family violence offences.

Two vehicle crash on highway at Kingston

8.20am: The road is now clear from the earlier crash.

August 28, 7.50am: Emergency services are quickly responding to a two vehicle crash at Kingston.

The incident occurred on the Huon Highway about two kilometres north of the Sandfly turn off and is impacting traffic in the north bound lanes.

Motorists have been urged to use caution in the area while the scene is cleared.

Police say no serious injuries have been reported.

This comes as severe weather continues to sweep through the state.,

The wild conditions left thousands of Tasmanian homes without power, with the widest impact felt in the Carlton, Dodges Ferry and Forcett area.

Meanwhile overnight, a fallen tree had brought down powerlines and blocked Nicholls Rivulet Road at Oyster Cove. While council workers in Launceston worked overnight to monitor water that was covering the road at Henry St, Launceston.

Police nab 27 texting and driving in one hour

In the space of just one hour, 27 drivers were pulled up by police for using a mobile phone while behind the wheel of a car in Hobart on Monday.

The drivers were each issued a $404 fine and three demerit points.

It is illegal to hold a phone or rest it on any other part of your body, type into a phone, look at your phone while driving in Tasmania.

Tasmania Police sergeant Andrew Sulman said phone use was considered one of the fatal five.

“We will continue to conduct both highly visible and covert operations that target the fatal five: speeding, fatigue, distraction, seatbelts, and alcohol and drugs,” he said.

Learner and provisional drivers are also banned from using phones via hands free or voice activation mode.
