Tasmania Christmas forecast: Warmer days expected for Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and state

After a cold and rainy start to summer, all Tasmanians want for Christmas is a few warm days. Here’s what you can expect for the festive week of weather.

Tasmanians can look forward to a warm and cloudy Christmas on Sunday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has released its official Christmas Day forecast, with most parts of the state expected to enjoy temperatures in the low-20s.

While it has been cooler than usual in recent weeks, Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Belinda House said Tasmania will experience typical December weather conditions come Christmas Day.

“It’s looking like we’re going to experience fairly average conditions in terms of our maximum temperatures. Typically across our state in December, maximum temperatures are generally around about the low-20s,” Ms House said.

“For Hobart, we’re looking at 14 to 21C with a partly cloudy day – 21C is quite close to average. Launceston, similarly, will be 12 to 23C and partly cloudy.

“If we look around some other locations, Devonport’s looking for a top of 21, St Helen’s a top of 23, Strahan a top of 19. So they’re generally within a degree or two of average for December.”

Tasmanians shouldn’t put away their umbrellas just yet – there is a slight possibility of showers across the state, with a 20 per cent chance of rain in Hobart, Launceston and Devonport.

“It is possible we will see some showers across the state on Christmas Day, but where it’s looking more likely is through the west with perhaps only a slight chance of those showers pushing through.

“Rainfall in the west is quite usual … it is looking to be a fairly typical summer pattern.”
