Man extradited to Tasmania to face child sexual abuse charge

1.40pm Friday: Police are extraditing a man from Queensland to Tasmania over a child sexual abuse charge.

Detectives from Northern Criminal Investigation Branch’s Victims Unit travelled to Townsville on Friday to extradite the 38-year-old man back to Tasmania.

The man has been remanded in custody to appear before the Launceston Magistrates Court on March 27 on the charge of Persistent Sexual Abuse of a Young Person.

The charge relates to crimes allegedly committed between 2018 and 2022 in Tasmania.

Vehicle clamped following excessive speeding in Granton

1.15pm Friday: A southern Tasmanian man has had his vehicle clamped for 28 days after he was nabbed exceeding the speed limit by more than 47km/h.

Acting Sergeant Shane Etherington of Road Police Services said the car was detected travelling at 147km/h in an 100km/h zone along the Lyell Highway at Granton on March 18.

“Speeding at any level is unsafe and places Tasmanian road users at risk,” Acting Sergeant Etherington said.

“All road users are reminded that police can and will clamp vehicles detected travelling at 45km/h or more above the speed limit.

“Police follow up with drivers and vehicles that have been detected by speed cameras, and I implore every driver to heed the warning and slow down.

“Dangerous drivers will be removed from our roads and police will continue to clamp or seize vehicles detected travelling at excessive speeds.

“Speeding puts the driver and other motorists at the very real risk of being killed or seriously injured in a crash.”

Anyone who sees dangerous driving is encouraged to report it to police immediately on 131 444. If you can’t report it at the time but you have footage, you can upload it to police.tas.gov.au/report/

Pedestrian struck by vehicle

10.30am Friday: Police are investigating after a pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the South Arm Highway this morning.

About 6.05am emergency services responded to a report of a male pedestrian struck by a vehicle on the South Arm Hwy at the intersection of Oceana Drive.

The pedestrian, aged in his 40s, was struck by a white Mitsubishi ASX and he was transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

The scene was attended by police from Bellerive Station and a scene examination was conducted by Crash Investigation Services and Forensic Services.

Police say an investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the crash.

“At this early stage in the investigation, police have established that the Mitsubishi was travelling south from the Shoreline Round-a-bout towards Rokeby when it collided with the man who was crossing the highway,” a spokesperson said.

“The driver of the vehicle was not physically injured. They remained at the scene and are assisting police with the investigation.

“Traffic diversions were in place for some time this morning and police thank the public for their patience.”
