A popular police officer and formidable football player is being remembered for his love of his family, his leadership, loyalty and infectious sense of humour.

Nearly 700 mourners attended the funeral of Sergeant Adam “Rex” Eastley, 42, at North Hobart on Thursday after his death recently from a heart attack.

Police Association of Tasmania acting president Nick Grubb said Sgt Eastley was a “natural leader” who cared deeply for his colleagues with his partner Danita Kelly and young daughters Scarlett and Rosie “the centre of his world”.

“Rexy was known for his larger-than-life personality, quick wit, and unwavering loyalty to his colleagues,” he said.

“He brought humour, heart, and a unique energy to every station he worked in. Whether it was through a perfectly timed one-liner or a quiet moment of support, he had a way of lifting the people around him.

“Those who served with Rexy knew him as a natural leader — someone who led from the front, backed his team no matter the challenge, and always kept morale high.

“He earned respect not through rank alone, but through genuine care for his people and a deep understanding of what it meant to wear the uniform.”

Sgt Eastley started his police career, he said, with a “cheeky streak that never quite left him” but he was always steady and reliable.

“He developed into a Sergeant who others turned to — for guidance, for a laugh, and for the kind of support only a true mate can offer.

“They were the centre of his world, and his love for them was clear in everything he did.

“He leaves behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and connection — and a thousand stories we’ll continue to share, laugh about, and hold dear.”

He said Sgt Eastley’s love for Danita, Scarlett and Rosie “was clear in everything he did”.

Inspector John Toohey, a friend and colleague for many years, said Sgt Eastley’s impact extended beyond his workplace.

“Rex’s legacy is one of dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to his community,” he said.

“He set an example of what it means to be a police officer, not just through his actions but through his genuine care for others.

“His impact on those he mentored, his colleagues, and the community will be remembered and cherished.”

Sgt Eastley was much loved in the football community and played for several clubs including Glenorchy, Hobart, Lindisfarne and OHA and St Virgil’s.

“He loved his footy, loved his teammates and was always up for a laugh, but never took it too seriously and never completed a warm up in his life,” the Hobart Football Club said on Facebook.

“He was a formidable tap ruckman in the 2000 Hobart Colts premiership side and then went onto play reserves and finally some seniors before moving up the coast in 2006 for police work.

“His infectious personality lit up the room and the track.

“The world is a little less bright. But his laugh and smile will never be forgotten.”

St Virgils said Sgt Eastley, who began playing with the club last year, would go down in history “for kicking the sealer in the Masters Grand final victory”.

“Rex was a laconic ruckman who enjoyed the contest and mateship that football offered,” the club said.

“Rex had an infectious personality and he was a great mate and clubman.”

OHA Football Club said he was a “gentle giant with a great personality”.

His classmates at Dominic College said Sgt Eastely would be remembered with love and affection.

Ms Kelly said he was her best friend, devoted dad and their hearts were broken.

“We will hold you tight in our memories and talk about how amazing you were every day,” she said.

“Along with your fierce loyalty, laughter, and fun sense of humour.”
