Direct flights from Hobart to Perth will be available from September, making Western Australia more accessible for Tasmanians and opening up a one-stop connection to Europe for the first time ever.

The new QantasLink service will operate three times a week, providing an extra 32,000 seats between the Tasmanian and WA markets.

Commencing on September 26, the Hobart-Perth link will run for most of the year, excluding May, June, and August.

Flights will take off on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays.

It marks the first time Qantas has operated a service between Hobart and Perth since 2023.

The airline is pitching the new route as a boon for business and leisure travellers, as well as fly in, fly out (FIFO) workers employed in the nation’s resources sector.

Hobart Airport CEO Norris Carter said the airport was “delighted” to have Qantas back on the Hobart-Perth route.

“As well as making it faster to reach Perth, for the first time ever we have one-stop flights between Hobart and Europe,” he said.

“It’s a great win for Tasmania, because it’s easier for Tasmanians to travel to Europe, and for European visitors to get to Tasmania.

“If London is calling, or you fancy a Roman holiday, this ticket is for you. This is another example of why we’re expanding our terminal and upgrading our runway to make tomorrow’s Tasmania possible.”

The new Hobart-Perth flights are now available for booking on Qantas’s website for a special price of $299 for one-way economy tickets, with the launch sale ending at 11.59pm AEST on Monday, June 2.

QantasLink CEO Rachel Yangoyan said the airline was “really proud” to restore its service between Hobart and the WA capital.

“These services will offer more seats and travel options into Perth and beyond on Qantas’ international network – and also support those working in the FIFO and resource sectors with connections across Western Australia on the QantasLink network,” she said.

The new service will be operated by the 150-seat QantasLink A319 aircraft, which currently runs intra-WA flights, particularly for the resources sector.

The terminal at Hobart Airport is currently undergoing a major $200m redevelopment, including a doubling of the departures area, a new arrivals corridor, expansion of security facilities, additional food and retail outlets, a third baggage reclaim, and a new forecourt.

The upgrades are being delivered in three stages, with the project set to be completed in 2027.

Hobart Airport currently welcomes about 2.5m passengers through its gates each year and this is projected to grow to 3.5m by 2030.
