Construction on a $60 million sports project is imminent as the state government hands over the first instalment of its funding pledge.
During this year’s state election, the Liberals pledged to provide $25 million to the Devonport Sports Precinct project.
The federal government will provide the same amount to the project, while the Devonport City Council will cough up $4.5 million.
The precinct will feature a multipurpose indoor stadium and outdoor sporting and training facilities for cricket, basketball and netball at the Devonport Oval site.
On the other side of town, Valley Road, home of the Devonport Strikers soccer club, will also receive upgrades.
On Friday, Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the delivery of the first instalment of the state government’s funding for the project was an exciting day in the history of sport on the North-West Coast.
“Our government wants to get as many Tasmanians active as possible because we know that physical activity is vital for healthy communities,” Mr Rockliff said.
“This project has the support of seven sporting codes because it has the power to increase participation across generations, supporting more Tasmanians to get involved in the sport that best suits them.”
Devonport Mayor Alison Jarman previously said the $60 million development would transform the sporting landscape of the city and the entire North-West.
“This is one vision, which has unified support from the major sporting codes, local clubs
and the council,” Ms Jarman said.
“It incorporates two sites and, most importantly, will benefit over 6000 local community sporting participants; it will certainly be a game changer.
“We are really starting to see the benefits from the council’s bold Living City vision and
this further investment will see the momentum in our city continue with many hundreds
of jobs to be created both during construction and also ongoing with the new
opportunities these facilities will create in both the sporting and major events areas.”
