Cradle Mountain could soon be home to a $3 million ‘eco-retreat glamping facility’.

A development application has been lodged with the Kentish Council for the proposed accommodation at 3759 Cradle Mountain Road.

The site was sold for $1.8m in 2023 but had been bought for $340,000 the previous year and $50,000 in 2018.

A permit has already been granted for the project by the council, but the new development application is an extension to the existing plans.

The planning report says the proposed facility will consist of eight accommodation pods, a shipping container storage and services area, a driveway and parking lot, and a water treatment zone.

“Each of the eco pods will be approximately 37m2 in area with a kitchenette, bathroom and private outdoor deck area,” the report reads.

“There will be a new gravel footpath and a raised boardwalk providing access from the parking lot to the eco pods.

“The shipping container storage and services area will be located adjoining the proposed car park.

“Two water tanks and a water treatment plant are located adjacent to the shipping container storage unit. This area is screened from the eco pods by a 2m high screen.”

The car park at the site is proposed to have nine spaces for vehicles.

“This car park is intended to be extended in the future, providing approximately 14 additional vehicle parking spaces,” the report said.

“There will be a powder coated steel or native timber entry gate at the start of the driveway on the frontage of Cradle Mountain Road.

“A directory sign will also be located on the Cradle Mountain Road frontage, which will include low-level direct lighting for illumination.

“This lighting will operate from dusk to midnight on a timer.”

Matthew Clark Planners, the company that prepared the report, said the council should approve the project.

“The proposal has been assessed against all relevant scheme criteria and is found to either comply with the acceptable solutions or satisfy the relevant performance criteria.

“The application is considered to be acceptable with respect to the Planning Scheme requirements and therefore ought to be supported by the Planning Authority.”

The public can view the development application via the Kentish Council website.
