Move over Australia’s Next Top Model, Australia’s Next Top Designer has arrived – and Tasmania has a finalist.
Emerging Hobart-based designer maker Patrick Adeney this week found out he is a finalist in the competition at the Design Show Australia.
Mr Adeney will be travelling to Sydney in October with his Mara benches and Arlo seats (pictured) to hopefully take the crown.
He told the Mercury he was yet to find out how many designers he would be up against but was thrilled nonetheless.
“I’ve been developing this work for two years … and to share it with people is amazing but to be given the opportunity to travel with my work is a dream come true,” he said.
Mr Adeney studied in Melbourne at Monash University and worked as a cabinet maker/tradesman for eight years, before relocating to Tasmania after scoring a scholarship from Designed Objects Tasmania.
He said the Tasmanian community has thrown its support behind him since he arrived, with the designer scoring both a grant from Arts Tasmania and five slabs of beer from Albert Brewery for the opening of his exhibition.
The Mara benches and Arlo seats are currently on display at Salamanca Arts Centres’ Long Gallery.
The free exhibition is open from 9am to 5pm daily until Sunday.
