An urban waterway that flows through Glenorchy from the foothills of kunanyi/Mt Wellington will receive a $1.7m environmental overhaul under a re-elected Albanese government, Labor’s candidate for Clark, Heidi Heck, has said.

While the funding will help pay for the removal of invasive species such as willow trees and blackberries at Humphreys Rivulet, Ms Heck said the conservation project would ultimately create a natural wildlife corridor from the mountain down to the Derwent.

The election commitment would also help Glenorchy City Council establish new picnic facilities and interpretive signage at the popular Chapel St waterfall.

“This is great news for our local environment and for families in Glenorchy,” Ms Heck said.

“With this election commitment, we’ll be able to create a natural corridor right through the heart of the city.

“Only Labor is committed to delivering for Glenorchy’s environment and supporting projects that bring long-term benefits to the community.”

The funding promise will also help to stabilise creek banks to prevent erosion and protect water quality, and replant native vegetation to restore biodiversity and provide animal habitats.

Tasmanian Labor Senator Carol Brown, who is seeking re-election at the 3 May national poll, described Humphreys Rivulet as a “treasured natural asset” for Glenorchy, which she was determined to return to good health.

“This project is about restoring a vital connection from kunanyi to the Derwent, protecting native wildlife and creating green spaces for people to enjoy,” Sen Brown said.

“This is about creating a space where families can spend time together, enjoy nature and feel proud of their local environment.

“I’m proud to be part of a Labor Government that’s backing practical projects that make our suburbs greener, safer and more connected.”

Meanwhile, the federal Labor government will also deliver $150,000 to establish an International Food Garden in Glenorchy if returned to office, a commitment Ms Heck said reinforced her party’s commitment to supporting Tasmania’s multicultural communities.

The planned garden would be a community-led space where people can grow food, build connections and include an outdoor kitchen and sheltered seating.

“Glenorchy is one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in Tasmania,” Ms Heck said.

“This project celebrates that. The International Food Garden will be a place where people can connect, learn from one another, and feel a real sense of belonging.”
