Businesses broken into in city centre

Hobart’s Corporate Centre has been broken into last night, The Mercury understands.

Reportedly more than a dozen businesses have been impacted by the break-in, but an official statement from Tasmania Police has not clarified how many in the centre were targeted.

“Police are investigating a report of a business broken into on Macquarie Street in Hobart,” a spokesperson said.

“The matter was reported to police around 7.40am this morning.

“Police are in attendance taking a report and investigating the matter.”

Multiple Tasmania Police cars were parked out the front of the centre this morning.

One uniformed officer was inside conducting interviews, while another officer left the building carrying two black bags.

More to come.

Sniffer dogs bust man with $112,000 worth of meth

11am Friday: A police drug detection dog helped uncover $112,000 worth of methamphetamine on a male passenger trying to get through Hobart Airport security.

Tasmania Police charged a 30-year-old man with trafficking and other drug offences following the interception at Hobart Airport on Thursday.

Detective Acting Sergeant Sam Storer said officers from Southern Drug Investigation Services and the Dog Handlers Unit were conducting routine general passenger screening at the airport when a police drug detection dog made a positive indication towards a passenger.

“The man was subsequently searched, and approximately 112 grams of methamphetamine was located,” he said.

“The man, from Southern Tasmania, was taken into custody while further investigations continued.

“He was later charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, unlawfully importing a controlled substance and other minor drug offences.

“Methamphetamine has a significant negative impact on our community and Tasmania Police will continue to proactively target and prosecute those involved in the illicit drug trade.”

Police said the drugs have an estimated street value of $112,000.

The man will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court in April.
