Hobart hairdresser Demelza Button’s passion for colour will see her compete on the world stage in Italy next month.

Ms Button, 32, recently won gold for the second year in a row at the Goldwell creative colourist awards and will travel to Milan to compete with hairdressers from around the world.

She is the head colour technician and educator at Sfumato Hair where she began her training 15 years ago and also a talented cutter and stylist.

“It’s definitely challenging to come up with new ideas to top what you’ve done and been successful with in the past,” Ms Button said.

“I just try to evolve each year, do my best work and I’ve been very lucky to take out the win two years in a row.

“It’s just a one shot entry, so one model, no boundaries really. You can do whatever creative colour and style you want.”

For the competition in Milan each representative has to re-create their winning look live in three hours and is judged on technique and final look.

“I’m very excited that the competition is being held in Milan this year. It’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to go and I’m still pinching myself that I get to go represent Australia there!

“It’s definitely nerve racking but also an amazing experience to be involved in so I’m just going to have fun with it and soak it all up.”

Ms Button knows how important a good hair colour is.

“In my opinion hair colouring, or hair in general, is so important to how someone can feel about themselves and express their personality and can definitely boost confidence and self-esteem,” she said.

“I’ve had many guests cry and hug me when I’ve finished their hair because they feel absolutely beautiful and I think that’s a very special thing to be able to do for someone.”

Sfumato owner Matt Minol is full of praise for Ms Button’s work and her awards success.

“I’m absolutely blown away,” he said.

“Demelza is a really hard worker and colour is her passion.

“She always gets the perfect line between what’s viable on a client and not being too out there.”

He has watched her career develop since she joined the salon as a 17-year-old and is optimistic she’ll bring home the gold from Milan.
