Tasmania has once again been treated to a spectacular aurora display overnight with the night sky so bright, it woke one couple living on the outskirts of Hobart.
Jon Harvey and his partner Preben Soerensen woke about 2.30am on Monday to a room filled with light at their home in Pawleena, in the Mt Morrison Ranges overlooking Sorell.
“At first I thought they were floodlights like you see on the top a ute,” Mr Harvey said.
“It took a few minutes to figure out what it was. The light was shimmering perpendicular to the vertical beams of the aurora. They were going right across the sky.
“I have seen auroras before in the northern hemisphere and weaker ones down here but nothing like last night.
Mr Harvey said he and his husband watched the light show for about an hour and a half and were still on a high.
“I don’t think I’ll ever see something like that again. I feel pretty special.”
Mr Harvey said the euphoria had meant they hadn’t been able to get back to sleep.
“I think I’ll have to have a few coffees and go to bed about lunchtime.”
It has been a big year for auroras across southern Australia.
In May many were treated impressive light shows when a solar storm lit up the skies over a couple of days.
