Tasmania’s newest AFL club has been swamped by a wave of support with more than 102,000 fans signing on as members since the Devils’ official launch across the state on Monday evening.
The figure has brushed aside the target of 40,000 the club had set.
Even though they will not kick a ball in anger in the AFL until 2028, that makes the Devils more popular in terms of memberships 11 of the existing AFL clubs, passing Gold Coast Suns, GWS Giants, North Melbourne, Brisbane Western Bulldogs, St Kilda, Fremantle, Port Adelaide, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne’s total memberships for 2023.
Tasmanian club officials expect that number to keep climbing on the second day of the club’s existence.
That level of support also sends a powerful message to politicians ahead of the state election on Saturday with the Macquarie Point Stadium project in the balance and the no stadium, no team condition riding on final confirmation of the club’s AFL Licence Agreement and future of the Devils.

Initial: The Tasmania Football Club will release its inaugural memberships at its official launch on Monday night and its Foundation Memberships are expected to sell like hot-cakes.
Called “Founding Memberships”, they will cost $10 per person and offer supporters a range of benefits, including the status of “founding member for life”.
The release of memberships will be part of the club’s launch across the state, at seven official locations and more than 20 other live sites.
The biggest day in the history of Tasmanian football, the club’s name, logo, jumper and colours will be unveiled at a gala reveal.
Details on how to become a member will be made available on the night.
Club merchandise will follow over the next few months.
Tasmania Football Club Chair Grant O’Brien encouraged supporters to jump onboard.
“The club has made a decision to release a Founding Membership that will allow as many Tasmanians as possible to be a part of the club,” he said.
“Our membership offering will evolve over the coming years, but for now, we are proud to provide one price and one way for everyone to become a founding member.
“We encourage all Tasmanians and football fans to sign up as a Founding Member and become part of the team.”
