Prize pooch Nathaniel is finishing his illustrious dog show career on a “fairytale” high.
The lhasa apso, aged eight, is now retiring after beating 4000 other dogs to receive the top honour at the Sydney Royal Dog Show yesterday.
It brought his tally of Best in Show titles to 101 — the world record for his breed.
Handler and co-owner Michael Camac broke down in tears after the win.
There was now nothing else for the talented pooch to achieve, he said. “I’ve won many awards but today was a very special one because it was always going to be his last dog show,” Mr Camac said. “To win is a fairytale.”
Mr Camac, of Adelaide, said Nathaniel’s five-hour grooming job for the show included blow-drying and straightening his long locks.
Stephanie Clark, 7, appreciated the effort after meeting the furry winner, given that her family used to also have a lhasa apso.
“His fur was soft and very straight,” she said. “I like how he stuck his tongue out and he was funny.”
